Disney Cruise

Day 3 of our cruise was Castaway Cay, which is one of our favorite stops.  Imagine if Disney had taken an entire Caribbean Island and turned it into a water park.  That’s basically how I describe Castaway Cay to people.  We aren’t beach people, but we love this port stop more than any others.  We had managed to grab the last Cabana on the family beach (Cabana #20) when we checked in for this cruise, so it was going to be a great day.  We invited our friends to enjoy the Cabana with us, since there was no additional charge for six people versus four people.… Read the rest

Day 2
Day 2

The day started early with the Disney Dream pulling into Nassau.  We’ve been to Nassau on previous cruises, but we had always treated it like a sea day and stayed on the ship.  Because we were traveling with friends, we came up with a new approach.  Nancy and our oldest daughter wanted to get off the ship and walk around with our friends, while I would stay on the ship with our youngest daughter.… Read the rest

Disney Cruise

We were very excited to get on board the Disney Dream as this was our first time on the ship.  As they called our boarding group, we walked through the giant Mickey ears and had our Keys to the World cards swiped for the first time on this cruise.  We skipped the initial photo since we never buy the photos on board.

One of our favorite things about taking a Disney cruise is when they announce your party to the ship.  It feels like that is the moment your vacation really begins (almost like driving through the Walt Disney World sign)!  After they announced our names, we took some pictures in the lobby and decided to head off for some lunch.… Read the rest

Disney Cruise, Travel

The travel day for our Disney Dream cruise finally arrived!  We had decided to leave really early so that we could join our friends at the airport.  We could easily kill time in the Admirals Club lounge at Reagan National Airport.  We were going to get the girls from school around noon, then leave for the airport at 12:30, which should get us there at 1:00 pm.  The flight didn’t leave until 3:00 pm, so we should have plenty of time to get lunch as well.

American Airlines Flight from Reagan National to Orlando

I thought we were getting a jump on the trip when we picked the kids up at 11:30 am.  But, that quickly went sideways.  Our youngest daughter had a slight medical issue that was going to require a trip to the doctor for some medication.  Nancy took her and headed off to the urgent care, hoping that we would be able to make it on time.  My wife was in and out of the urgent care in about an hour and a half, but that put us at about 1:15 pm.  We still had to get her prescription filled and get to the airport.  We loaded everybody in the car and headed to the drugstore.  Nancy ran into the drug store and quickly explained our issue.  It still took them a little bit to put the prescription together, but they definitely went above and beyond to speed us on our way.  We left the drug store around 1:45 pm and drove like crazy to get to Reagan National.  We parked in the daily parking and went inside.  We found a relatively empty check-in line and checked our bags.  Thankfully, we have TSA Precheck, which got us through security in less than 5 minutes.  We arrived at the gate just as boarding started.  Thankfully, our friends had grabbed us lunch so we got a chance to eat before boarding.  They were life savers!… Read the rest

Disney Cruise

Disney Cruise Line’s private island, Castaway Cay, is a small slice of paradise in the Caribbean!  On this slice of paradise, Disney added a private getaway where you can escape the crowds of people that you’ve been traveling with on your cruise ship.  These private getaways are called Cabanas and they are small cabins placed on a private sections of the family beach and the adult beach.  There are twenty regular and one large sized Cabanas on the family beach.  We will only be talking about the Cabanas on the family beach as we have never experienced the ones on the adult beach.… Read the rest

Here are the ten cheapest (per night) cruises you can take with two adults and two children in an Verandah stateroom as of August 6, 2017.  The list has moved around a little bit.  Lots of good choices on the older ships.  The newer ships only offer two Fantasy sailings, both starting in September of this year, which isn’t far away.… Read the rest

Disney Gift Cards

As you may have read, the Disney Vacation Account is no more.  On July 25 2017, Disney announced that they would be shutting down the Disney Vacation Account program.  Future contributions were suspended and owners with existing funds were offered 4 options for their accounts.  We are going to focus on how to liquidate your account using Option 1, which offers owners the opportunity to buy a Disney Gift Card using funds in their account.  The gift card is distributed via email.  As an added loyalty bonus, Disney offered to increase the amount on the gift card by 5%.… Read the rest

Disney Gift Cards

We just received the following email:

Here are the four options:

I think we are going to go with Option 1, since it provides the largest bonus.  Obviously, this is another hit to our plan to maximize our savings on Disney Vacations.  We still like saving 5% or more by buying Disney Gift Cards, but loosing this 2% bonus (plus the ability to organize the money) is going to be another hit on the way.… Read the rest
