During a recent Disney Cruise, we participated in the Rum Tasting.  The class is a chance to learn about how rum is made and to try five different types.  The class costs $28 per person and the amount is charged to your room.  It is important to note that if you would like to do one of these tastings, you should sign up when you check in to your cruise or first thing when you board the ship on the first day. <\/p>\n

Our tasting was located in the old Outlook Cafe, which is sometimes used as an expansion for the Concierge Lounge.  It was the fourth night of our cruise at 10:00 pm.  We had previously been there for a whiskey tasting on the first night of the cruise.<\/p>\n

There were multiple tasting locations set up for all the participants.<\/p>\n

The various rums we would be trying were on a table at the front of the room so we could look them over.<\/p>\n

The class started with the instructor giving a history of rum and the various ways it has been made over the years.  I’ll now try to pass along the information we were told in the class with the caveat that I know very little about rum.<\/p>\n

The first rum we tried was Flor de Cana.  This rum is made in Nicaragua and is a blend of 18 year old rums.<\/p>\n

The next rum was Zaya, which is a blend of different rums, each of which have been distilled five times.  We were told it was aged 16 years in fresh barrels, but a little bit of internet searching seems to conflict the barrel portion of the lesson.<\/p>\n

The third rum we tried is Zacpa, which is a blend of Guatemalan rums.  The rum is then aged in Sherry Barrels. <\/p>\n

The fourth rum we tried is Kraken Spiced rum, which was aged two years.<\/p>\n

Our last tasting was Rum Chata, which is a rum liquor.  It is composed of Rum with cream, sugar, vanilla, and spices.<\/p>\n

 Overall, this class was much better than the whiskey tasting.  The rum was good and not as strong as the whiskey.  Some of them were sweet while others had a lot of spice to them.  As light weight drinkers, we made sure to not finish all the drinks, which definitely helped with our enjoyment of the tasting.<\/p>\n
