Key West

We actually didn’t plan our visit to Key West.  Our only plan for the day was to get off the ship and make our way to the southernmost point, where the famous buoy is located.  Yes, it is one of the big tourist things to do, but we are tourists.  Key West was beautiful when the ship pulled up.  Everyone on the ship had to report to various places around the ship to go through US Customs.  It didn’t take very long to get through the line, maybe 15 minutes or so.  After that, we were free to go ashore.

We stopped on the way off the ship for a few pictures of the ship.  After that, we headed towards the buoy.  We were about a mile away, so we headed down Duval Street.  That might not have been the most family friendly route, given some of the stores we saw on the way down.  Most of the issues were from T-shirt vendors, but there were quite a few bars operating at noon as well.  I’m sure the place is quite lively when the sun goes down.  After reaching the ocean, we took a turn to the west and found it.  There was a line to get a picture, so we patiently waited our turn.

 

After getting our picture, we had accomplished all of our goals for Key West.  We decided to head back up towards the ship, but not on Duval Street.  We did eventually want to get some lunch, but figured we would cut back towards Duval Street (where most of the dining places were) after we had seen some other parts of Key West.  We hadn’t gone more than a block when we ran into a guy selling coconuts out of the back of his truck.  He would drill a hole in it and you could drink the coconut water out of it.  Of course, we had to get one to share!

We did eventually stop for lunch on Duval Street.  We then headed back towards the ship and Mallory Square to get some souvenirs before we left Key West.  We got back on the ship to enjoy our last night on board the ship.

 

Unfortunately, I don’t have pictures of dinner that night.  The last night on the ship usually gets spent packing the room up so we can get the suitcases into the hallway by 10:00 PM.  They take them and position them for the next day.  You keep whatever you need in the room with you to get to sleep, then wake up the next day to get off the ship.  They always warn you multiple times to make sure you keep your Passport and a change of clothes with you so you don’t have to walk off the ship in your pajamas.
