On a recent Royal Caribbean cruise on Ovation of the Seas, we got to try out the Royal IQ app. This app is available on iPhone or Android and needs to be downloaded before you get on board the ship. We weren’t quite sure what we were going to get with the app, but after having sailed, we are happy to share what we have learned.
The first thing the app offers is a listing of all the onboard activities. This is found in a simple grid with an explanation for the activity. It is similar to what you will find in the paper cruise compass that is delivered to your stateroom. Once you select an item, you can get more information or make a reservation for the activity.
It will also give you a listing of all the excursions you have booked through Royal Caribbean, along with the ability to book more.
The app will show you the various dining establishments on board, along with their menus. You can even make reservations for specialty dining. This is really helpful if you are looking for a bite to eat.
Another feature of the App that isn’t as popular is the ability to look at your onboard account complete with all your charges and credits.
The last feature of the app that we used was the chat feature. As it turns out, we figured out that we could use iMessage on our phones to chat with each other. We didn’t end up using the chat feature after that. We don’t know if we could use iMessage because we paid for the chat feature (at $7.95 per person for the cruise) or because it was already available.
Another nice feature of the app is the ability to enter your email address so you can get your final onboard account balance (and all transactions) sent to you after you have left the ship.
