Our friend, Sarah Coggins, recently went on the Disney Wonder in May 2022 for an Alaskan Cruise.  She sent us a picture of the Princess menu from Tiana’s Place with some Alaska Inspirations on it.  Follow Sarah Coggins on twitter or check her awesome blog.  She has a great article about her trip as well.

Day At Sea
Day At Sea

Today was the only sea day that we had on this seven night cruise.  We had managed to get a coveted Palo brunch reservation, but that was the end of the planning we had done for the day.  We woke up at a respectable 9 am.  Since our brunch wasn’t until noon, we decided to head up to the pool deck to relax in the warm weather.

The family pool area was very crowded, so we eventually ended up on Deck 10 to to get a good spot to watch Funnel Vision.  We had a fairly decent spot and spent the next few hours enjoying the warm weather.

After a fantastic lunch, we left Palo and returned to the room to change back into our pool deck attire.  We wanted to return to the family pool area and lay in the sun to enjoy the fantastic weather while we could.  We went back up to find our spot on Deck 10 unoccupied, so we sat back down to spend the afternoon watching funnel vision.

The ship spent most of the day going in circles between the British Virgin Islands and the US Virgin Islands.  I don’t think we had that far to go in order to return to San Juan.  The weather was fantastic.

We spent most of the rest of the afternoon on Deck 10 enjoying funnel vision.  As the afternoon went on, we eventually left the pool deck.  We took a quick look through the shops again to see if we wanted any additional souvenirs we wanted before the end of the cruise.

We then headed back to the room to pack up.  Unfortunately, we had this letter waiting for us in the room.  We were planning to take our bags off the ship with us, but we didn’t want to have to worry about packing after dinner when we would probably already be tired.

Nancy continued to pack while the girls and I got ready for dinner early.  We headed to the D Lounge to try our hand at Disney Tunes Trivia (which we did not win).  Nancy finished packing the bags, and met us at Tiana’s for our last dinner of the cruise.  The dinner theme for tonight was Tiana’s Place Mardi Gras.  Dinner was great as always, and our serving team took special care of us.  Our waiter even spent some time showing the girls how they put the food orders into the computer so they all came out correctly.  Once the meal was over, we handed out the tip envelopes and strolled out of the dining room.

Nancy and I went out onto Deck 4 to look around and discovered we were right off the coast of San Juan.  Our cell phones had a full signal, so we took advantage of it to catch up on emails and other things.  Nancy didn’t linger too long, she headed back to the room to finish off the last of the packing.  She sent me this picture of our towel animal for the night, which was the best one yet.

I spent about 30 minutes getting caught up on emails, then I returned to the room to get ready for bed.  Tomorrow, we would be leaving the ship for a tour of San Juan before heading to the airport and flying home.

Antigua
Antigua

Today was our first trip to the island of Antigua!  We were pretty excited because we love stopping at new places.  Nancy and I got up early and went to Cabanas for a quick bite and some coffee, then headed back to the room and woke the girls up.  After they got ready, we all went back to Cabanas so the girls could eat.

Once everyone was fed, we left the ship for a bit of shopping in the port area.

The shopping area of the port is really nice.  There are a lot of shops crowded relatively close together right at the end of the pier.  Most of your common port stores are located here, including the notorious Diamonds International.  This port area was an enclosed security area with guards near the entrances.  We wondered outside the area and still felt very safe.

While looking around for souvenirs, we stumbled on a small shopping village off to the side.  It was really nice with a number of smaller cafes and artist shops.  We really enjoyed looking around this area.  After getting some iced coffee, we headed back to the ship to get ready for our tour.

The quickest path back to the ship took us along a wood pier.  This was a nice opportunity to get a different view of the ships.

We got back on board and went to grab another quick bite from the quick service restaurants before we left.  We didn’t want to get too hungry on the tour.  Our scheduled excursion meeting place was in Azure on Deck 3, so we arrived 10 minutes before our scheduled time.  We were going to participate in the “Amazing Antigua” Tour.

According to Disney Cruise Line’s website, this is advertised as:

Visit English Harbour, home to the famed Nelson’s Dockyard, Blockhouse Ruins and Shirley Heights Lookout.

On this adventure you will…

  • Board an air-conditioned minibus with an experienced, knowledgeable tour guide and ride approximately 30 minutes through Antigua’s countryside, rich in daily West Indian life. Explore local villages and see old churches that exemplify West Indian culture. Travel past the magnificent view of Falmouth Harbour to English Harbour and Nelson’s Dockyard. Built in 1725, the Dockyard served as the base for the English naval squadron patrolling the West Indies.
  • Enter the historic park, the only working Georgian dockyard in the world, and meet a National Parks Guide, who will lead you on a short, informative walking tour through the Dockyard with its beautifully restored buildings, detailed plaques and many points of interest.
  • Enjoy a complimentary and refreshing rum or fruit punch followed by free time to explore the Dockyard, museum, art gallery, gift shop and boutiques.
  • Conclude your roughly one-hour visit and continue by minibus to Dow’s Hill Interpretation Centre at Shirley Heights, where you will view a fascinating 15-minute multimedia presentation tracing the island’s history.
  • Continue on up to the former signal station, Shirley Heights Lookout, for a picture-perfect view of Nelson’s Dockyard and English Harbour.
  • Travel back through Antigua’s picturesque villages en route back north to St John’s.

Once we got organized, we were assigned a Donald Duck sticker and then led off the ship to an awaiting Mini-Bus.

The mini bus was air conditioned, but some of the seats were more comfortable than others.  Our party got split up and I ended up sitting in the back in a seat that had a hump for the wheel.  My knees ended up uncomfortably high.  I also ended up next to some excited individuals that talked for a good portion of the trip, making it hard to hear the guide as she gave a narrated tour.

The bus left quickly and we were off.  We got a good description of the general day to day activities in the main town and of the various locations that we passed, including schools, churches, and stadiums.

We passed an old sugar mill and got an explanation of its history.

This is the Sir Vivian Richards Stadium, which was used in the 2007 Cricket World Cup.

We also passed a number of historical churches on the tour.

After about 30 minutes, we arrived at Nelson’s Dockyard, which was an English Naval Base and shipyard.  Nancy was really excited about visiting because she liked Duran Duran and they filmed a couple of videos at this location (including their video for “Rio”).

After we left the bus, we were assigned to a guide specifically employed by the Dockyard.  She explained the history of the dockyard and its unique capabilities in the colonial period.  She explained that we would get a quick tour of the dockyard, followed by a drink that was included with our tour.

After a short walk down the hill, we got to see the various buildings that comprised the dockyards.  Some were barracks, officers’ quarters, and shops that made sails.

We also got to see the captans, which are large wheels that were used to help clean the bottom of the ships.  Lines would be attached to the masts of the ships and they would be pulled in to tip the ship on its side.  The bottom could be cleaned and repaired.

After we saw the captans, we were directed to a bar to collect some rum punch.  We relaxed for a little bit and looked at the ships.

After we finished looking at the ships, we headed back towards the bus, making sure to look into the shops as we walked.  The meeting location was back at the entrance where we were dropped off.  I definitely didn’t want the same seats we had on the trip here.  Once the bus came, we loaded up right away and sat together near the front.  The entire group eventually arrived and got on board as well.  We then headed to the Dow’s Hill Interpretation Center.  This consisted of an elevated platform you can go up on to look around as well as a visit to an interpretative history of the island.

The views from the elevated platform was amazing, including a great view of English Harbor.

The interpretation center visit was really nice, but we weren’t allowed to take photographs inside.  There was a restroom and a small shop there as well.  Once we finished at this place, we were hurried off to Shirley Heights Lookout for another quick photo stop.

When I say quick, I meant like we had 5 minutes to get off the bus, get a quick photo, and then jump back on the bus.  There were a few vendors selling items here, but we didn’t feel like we could spend any time looking.

We got back on the bus and began the long drive back to the ship.  The guide kept us fairly well entertained trying to teach us some aspects of the local dialect.  She then answered any questions that were posed from members of the tour.  Overall, it was a good tour.  I don’t know that we would sign up to do it since we already did it once, but we all enjoyed it.

We got back to the ship right before sail away.  Once on board, we dropped off our bags in the room and headed up to the pool deck to get a snack.  I ended up back at the shawarma station (again), along with a plate of fries.  We took our food to the top deck and enjoyed it while watching the sunset.

Around 7:00, we headed back to the room to shower and get ready for dinner.  We decided to go watch “So you think you know your family” in Azure.  Its a great family game show and had us howling with laughter.

Once the show ended, we headed for Tiana’s for dinner.  The menu was the Princess night menu (not the traditional New Orleans menu).

After dinner, Nancy and I went to Cove Cafe for Cognac tasting.  Once that was over, it was time for bed.  It had been a long night and the cognac was making us really tired.  We headed to back to our room to discover another great towel animal creation!

Tomorrow, our destination will be the French Island of Martinique!

French Quarter Lounge
French Quarter Lounge

During a recent sailing on the Disney Wonder, we got to see the new French Quarter Lounge located on Deck 3, the former location of the Promenade Lounge.  The French Quarter Lounge is located right outside of Tiana’s Place, one of the themed dining rooms.  This area was completely redone during a recent dry dock upgrade to better match the theme of Tiana’s Place.

The general structure of the lounge didn’t change very much.  The center of the lounge consists of a stage (which often has musical acts).

The left portion of the lounge is taken up by a bar.  The bar has a few beers on draft, including some Abita brews – which are also featured in Tiana’s Place.

Immediately to the left of the bar is a small hallway that leads to a crew area.  Disney made sure to theme this area as well.

The right side of the lounge definitely received an upgrade.  There is a built in monitor (I believe for various games that can take place in the Lounge).  There are also new tables and chairs to fit the overall theme.

The best upgrade is at the far right of the lounge, which used to be where the internet help desk was located.  It has been replaced with a street trolley!

The streetcar has several booths as well as additional seating.

There is a plaque inside as well to explain the purpose of the streetcar.

The lounge has a great new vibe, especially when combined with the experience of Tiana’s Place.  It was a lot of fun to hang out in the lounge before our second seating dinner, then head straight into the fun atmosphere of Tiana’s.

The French Quarter has its own menu as well, which includes drinks and snacks!

We ordered the Beignets while we were here.  They are the same ones that are served in Tiana’s Place during the Mardi Gras night menu.  The French Quarter also features drink coasters that are unique to this lounge.

While we were enjoying drinks here, the bartender also brought us some snacks to enjoy with our drinks – roasted fava beans, pretzel chips, and a savory snack mix.  Nancy really liked the fava beans. read more

Day 5
Day 5

Day 5 of our cruise was the last full day of the cruise and our last port stop, this time at Ensenada.  We had never visited Ensenada before, so everybody was looking forward to the visit.  The Wonder docked at the main dock in the port, but it is about a mile or so from the main part of town.

We had planned to get off the ship and walk to town.  We went to Cabanas for breakfast, then headed off the ship.

There is a small gift shop as you leave the pier.  As we exited the shop, there was a shuttle bus that would take people into the main part of town for $4 per person, round trip.  There seemed to be some confusion among other passengers who felt the shuttle should be free.  We didn’t care and took the shuttle into town.  The shuttle was a small passenger bus that was clean and comfortable.  They gave us a ticket for the return trip.

There definitely isn’t very much in the immediate port area.  Most of it looks like it is under construction.

The main street of Ensenada is a tourist paradise.  Lots of street vendors and shops selling various items.  We walked from one end of the main street to the other, stopping in a few shops and looking at what the street vendors were selling.  I think the main street isn’t more than a half mile or so.

After looking through the various shops, we decided to head to lunch.  Nancy had looked up a restaurant, La Patrona,  that was a little bit from the main tourist area.  La Patrona is a taqueria located a few blocks south.

There isn’t much to the restaurant, it is a small kitchen and outdoor seating.  The specials for the day (and the WiFi password) is written on a blackboard attached to a fence.  Don’t be deceived by the appearance though, the food and drinks were fantastic.

We started by ordering Coco Cafechata, which was a cold brew coffee with horchata.  It was delicious.

I don’t remember exactly what we ordered for lunch, but here are some of the pictures of it.  I remember they both were really good.

For dessert, Nancy ordered Pan Frances, which was kind of like french toast.  It was awesome!  It consisted of bread covered in Nutella, Raspberry sauce, and granola.

After a filling lunch, we decided to head back up the main street all the way to the other end.  Nancy wanted to stop in at Papas & Beer for a drink before we got back on the ship.

Nancy got a beer and everybody else got frozen drinks.

We finished our drinks and looked in the shops a bit more.  We decided to just walk back to the ship, which was about a mile or so.  We could have used the shuttle, but the walk was only about 20 to 30 minutes and it was a good opportunity to see the rest of the town.

There is a small entrance gate you must pass through to get back to the ship, but it is primarily there to stop vehicle traffic.  I don’t even know if we were asked to show our Key to the World Card to get through the gate.

Once we got back to the Wonder, the girls and I headed to the pool deck to watch Brave.  Nancy headed to the room to start packing since we had to leave the ship in the morning.

After enjoying the movie, we headed back to the room to get ready for dinner and to watch the Wonder sail away from Ensenada.

We got ready for dinner super early, because we wanted to get to the atrium to meet  a special guest.  Disneyhad just announced that Captain Minnie would be joining the fleet:

Introducing Captain Minnie Mouse

We know how Disney characters have a unique ability to inspire and connect with children. Now at Disney Cruise Line, Captain Minnie Mouse will encourage young girls around the world to consider a career in the maritime industry. She will spread the message of exploring new horizons, both by land and by sea.

Nancy had managed to get a partial picture of her on Deck 4, but we figured she would be out greeting guests in the atrium in the evening.  We wanted to be first in line, so we headed down at 7:00 pm for the 7:30 pm meet and greet.  We were definitely first in line!  Captain Minnie looked great in her new Captain’s outfit!

After seeing Captain Minnie, we were in for another surprise as well.  We were going to dine in Tiana’s tonight with the new menu.  We had been in Tiana’s the first night of the cruise, but had a different menu – Let the Magic Begin

We loved the transformation from the old Parrot Cay.

We also loved the band!  If you would like to see the food, check the menu link above where we have pictures of everything we ordered.

Tonight we also got to meet the Head Pastry Chef on board the Disney Wonder, who had been sending us all these fantastic desserts, including this one:

We thanked him for the fantastic desserts he had been sending to us all week. He said our server, Shane, had suggested us as the perfect family for the treats.  He had helped to make our fantastic cruise even better.  We then headed back to the room to finish packing up.  We would carry our bags off tomorrow so we didn’t have to worry about getting them out by 10 pm. Wising up after twelve Disney cruises, we ordered coffee from room service to enjoy the next morning.  If you order it late at night, it should still be warm in the morning.

Here was our last towel animal of the cruise:

Tomorrow, we will be leaving the ship, but not the vacation.

Disney Cruise

Day 1 - Boarding
Day 1 – Boarding

There is nothing quite like entering the atrium of one of the beautiful Disney Cruise Line Ships and hearing your family’s named announced.  We got to experience that today when we got on board the Disney Wonder.  We had not been on the Wonder in quite some time, our last cruise on board was for Spring Break in 2016!

We always love to stop and see Ariel.  The lobby of the Wonder had changed slightly since we’ve seen it last, including this new chandelier.

Our first stop once we were done in the lobby was to head to Triton’s for lunch.  The first person we ran into was a former server from a previous trip.  We chatted with him for a bit and tried to catch up to determine which crew members were on board.  It turned out that our first and favorite server was on board.  After we enjoyed lunch, I headed over to the Azure Lounge to change our table requests for the cruise.  We wanted to get seated with our favorite server since he was on board.  Since we were on second seating, they said it shouldn’t be a problem.

After changing our table, we headed to our new room.  We met our stateroom attendant and explained the we had upgraded at the port and our bags would be headed to our old room.  He asked for a description and said he would be happy to bring them up.  We spent some time checking out the room, then we went off to explore the ship.

Our first stop was the D-Lounge, which is used for family type events.

We then headed towards the new After Hours Adult Area that replaced the old Route 66.

The Azure club replaced what was Wavebands.

The Cadillac Lounge seems like it hadn’t changed at all.  I remember when Nancy and I walked in there during our first cruise.  We immediately turned around and walked back out.  It definitely wasn’t our vibe.  I don’t think we’ve been back in during the five cruises that we’ve sailed on the Wonder.  We probably should actually give it a fair chance though.

The Crown and Fin Pub replaced the Diversions Lounge.  It got the same look as O’Gills Pub on the Disney Magic.  Nancy and I really enjoy the pub and headed here quite a few times on this cruise.

After checking out the Adult Area, we went through the kids clubs.  Unfortunately, all our pictures turned out a bit fuzzy.  The clubs definitely got a make over since the last time we saw them.  They were all nicely redone.  After everybody got registered in their respective clubs, we headed up to the pool deck.  We got there early enough so you could actually still see water in the family pool.

We then headed over to the adult pool area.  Not many people had settled in the pool area yet, so we were able to get some great pictures.

We again passed through the lobby and I made sure to stop by the future cruise desk and drop off a placeholder request for our next cruise.  I always like to drop off our request on the first day and then follow up a few days into the cruise to make sure it was actually put in.  We then headed back to the room.  This gave us time to put on our door decorations, although sadly not many people walk by the back of the ship to enjoy them.  We then headed to our station for the muster drill.

Our muster station this time was in Animator’s Palate, which was a first for us.  We followed a series of crew only staircases to get there and entered through a side door of the restaurant.  Mustering inside was nice since it kept us out of the sun.  We could also sit down as well instead of standing up while waiting for people to arrive.  Once the muster drill was complete, we headed up to see the new Sail a-Wave party.  Honestly, I couldn’t really tell the difference between this party and the previous one.  Lots of pop songs and dancing, along with a showing by Mickey and the gang.

Sailing out of San Diego was awesome though.  We got to see the cool bridge to Coronado Island as well as the Naval Air Station North Island. Lots of sailboats as well on our way out.

After we watching the sail away from San Diego, we headed up to the pool deck for a snack.  We ended up sitting near the pool and watching Big Hero 6 on funnel vision for a while.  We had second seating for dinner, which meant we didn’t sit down until 8:00 pm.  That was west coast time, so three hours later than normal for those of us from the east coast.

Dinner tonight was in Tiana’s with the Let the Magic Begin Menu.  We were super excited to see the redesigned restaurant (last time we were on board it was Parrot Cay).  We headed to the hostess stand to talk with the restaurant manager.  He remembered me from earlier in the day and took us to Table 45, where we we got introduced to Willy, the assistant server.  Our head server Shane eventually came over and remembered us immediately (we make quite the impression at dinner).  We got to catch up with him a bit before he had to attend to his other tables.

The girls ate their dinner and ran off to attend the Ice Breakers events in both their clubs.  Nancy and I said goodnight to Shane and Willy, then headed to Cove Cafe for Whiskey Tasting.  We had a good time at that event, but it had been a super long day.  We headed to the room to call it a night.

Next up, we spend a day at sea while on the way to our first stop in Cabo San Lucas!
