Wes Sauer of the DCL Dude Podcast, recently went on a 3-Night Bahamian Cruise on the Disney Dream. He originally posted this on his Facebook page, but was kind enough to let us repost it here! Wes and his wife are also Disney travel agents who specialize in Disney cruises. If you’d like a free, no obligation quote, send Wes an email at wes@mickeyworldtravel.com.
You can listen to his trip report here:
Day 2 started out unlike any other vacation we’ve taken over the last 6 years…in silence. No 6:00 am wake up calls from tiny humans. It felt quite strange. As hard as I tried to sleep in, my kids have my body conditioned for these early morning wake-ups, so I was wide awake around 6:45. I got up and started moving around the stateroom, being careful not to wake up my wife. I headed out on the verandah while we sailed into the Nassau port channel and Captain Andy flipped the ship around and backed her into her berth. My wife would inform me later that I made a lot of noise and didn’t allow her to sleep in as much as she would have liked. Whoops!
We also began the day with another first – a morning workout! My wife headed off to the gym to use the elliptical while headed down to deck 4 to get in a run. If I weren’t training for a half marathon in February, you would NEVER catch me working out on vacation! I made it four laps around before my run got cut short due to a “safety training”. They were, in fact, doing some power washing, but I guess they don’t have a sign for that.
This trip was much about trying new (to us) things, so I headed up to the Vista Café to grab an iced coffee. In my opinion, the free coffee on the Disney Cruise Line is almost undrinkable and I’ve been meaning to try something from one of the cafes onboard. As I read through the menu, I was disappointed to see that there was no iced coffee option, but the barista gladly offered to make me one. He stamped my coffee card and I headed back to the stateroom to meet back up with Alyssa. As I took my first sip, I wondered why I have spent so much time sucking down that other poison they call coffee. It was excellent!
Once cleaned up, it was off to Cabanas for breakfast.
The weather was exactly what we were hoping for – sunny and hot – and we spent the rest of the morning doing exactly what we wanted to do on this trip…NOTHING. We spent time going back and forth between reading on lounge chairs and relaxing in the Satellite Falls fountain in the adults-only area on Deck 13 Forward.
The next activity was something I had really been looking forward to. I wanted to watch a movie on funnel vision, and it worked out perfectly that Tangled would be playing! Normally we can catch clips of the movies while the kids are splashing in the pool, but that usually doesn’t last very long. I wanted to actually watch the movie. Before it started, though, we waited in the “45 minute” line for the Aquaduck, which extended all the way down to the bottom of the stairs. I timed it on my watch and it ended up being closer to 30 minutes, but still a long time for a day in port. Worth it, though!
After the movie, it was off to another “first” for us – I pre-ordered single-day Rainforest passes in the Senses Spa. My wife and I were joking leading up to it that we had NO idea what to do in there (and I would probably tell you that we still don’t). When you check in, they put a sticker on your Key to the World card indicating that you can come and go throughout the day as you please. They give you a robe and then escort you to the Rainforest area and to the locker rooms to change. You also get a rubber wrist band that will unlock the door to the Rainforest room. I didn’t take pictures inside because I wasn’t sure if that would be allowed. The first area that you come to are the themed showers. Each shower has different settings and the spray is different depending on which option you choose. Each shower had three different options, and I thought it was a pretty cool experience. My wife did not enjoy it as much because most of the options had cold water. Near the showers there were two types of steam rooms and a more traditional sauna. We spent about 3 minutes in one of the steam rooms and my wife said the other one smelled like wet socks.
Around the corner was a long room with a dozen or so hot stone loungers and through a set of glass doors there were two jacuzzi tubs that were double occupancy. The jacuzzi tubs were situated on what I would describe as being similar to an open-air verandah and looked out over the side of the ship. Both tubs were occupied, so we spent some time on the hot stone loungers, which I really enjoyed. I was wishing I had my book, but I didn’t want to go out and get it. Once a jacuzzi freed up, we climbed in and spent 15-20 minutes in total relaxation. After that, we left the spa and didn’t return, but we both commented that we felt very relaxed afterward. We enjoyed the experience, but I can’t say for sure if we would do it again. We’re not really spa people.
After the spa, I wanted to go ashore just to say I did. I was off and back on in less than an hour and then it was back to our verandah for some more reading and intermittent napping before our dinner at Palo.
One of the best perks about being a Platinum Castaway Club member is the complimentary dinner in Palo. We haven’t taken advantage of this perk in the past because we haven’t wanted to leave our kids in the kids clubs while we eat, so it was really nice to be able to enjoy the experience.
I wish I had taken a picture of the menu because I can’t remember exactly what each of our courses were called. I ordered the tomato, basil, and mozzarella appetizer (which I will order EVERY time it is available on a menu), and my wife had an arugula and pear salad. I had the scallops entrée, which might have been one of the best meals I’ve ever had. It was fantastic. My wife ordered the butternut squash ravioli, which she will also order any time she sees it on a menu. She very much enjoyed it, as well. For Dessert, our waiter, Katia, basically told us we were having the soufflé because it’s their signature dessert. She said she was making one for each of us and if we still wanted to look at the dessert menu afterward, we could. Turns out she was not wrong and we both devoured the soufflés. We were too full afterward to think about eating anything else.
Another thing we were REALLY excited for on this trip was the performance of Beauty and the Beast in the Walt Disney Theater. The show debuted two weeks after our last sailing on the Dream, so we barely missed out. And let me tell you, the show DID NOT disappoint. It was fantastic! We were in awe the entire time of the costumes, the effects, the puppets, the set…everything about it. I would say it’s easily the best show offered on Disney Cruise Line.
On embarkation day, we visited White Caps and noticed that many of the items in the store were on clearance. What luck! We found a few things we liked and vowed to be back to take advantage of the sales. Turns out there was a reason for it – White Caps transformed overnight into a Christmas shoppe, complete with new Very Merrytime merchandise. I’m not going to post all the merchandise pictures, but you can head over to my Twitter account to see them.
It was pirate night, so we headed up to deck 12 to catch the fireworks. We watched from the other side of the forward funnel where it was much quieter. We could still hear the stage performance and the music, but it was much more muffled. As always, the fireworks show did not disappoint – one of my favorite experiences at sea.
After that, we called it a night. We wanted to be well-rested for our day in Castaway Cay.

Our day in Cabo started with us waking up as the Wonder glided into the harbor. This was a new port for us, so we were excited to get off the ship and explore the town. We couldn’t see the famous arch of Cabo San Lucas but we figured we would get to see it when the ship left the port.
We decided to start our day with a large breakfast at Cabanas. We were going to have lunch in the town, but it wouldn’t be until later in the day. Cabanas wasn’t too busy this morning, probably because most people had already left the ship. We didn’t have a planned excursion for the day, choosing instead to just look around.
After enjoying our breakfast, we headed down to the Buena Vista Theater to catch a tender boat. We took the tender boat off the ship and were dropped off at one end of the inner harbor.
We wanted to head to the other end of the docks, but got a bit turned around. We ended up walking near a Navy Pier. Since we obviously weren’t headed in the right direction, we turned around and headed back to the harbor area (thankfully, we had google maps turned on).
We got back to the harbor area pretty quickly and started walking. There were lots of street vendors selling items in the harbor area. Some of them had some pretty interesting items, but we didn’t end up buying anything. There were some with various animals that would try to place them on you and take a picture for money. My youngest one artfully dodged one of them when she tried to place an iguana on her. She later told me that she doesn’t really like lizards.
We got to the other end of the harbor after about an hour or so. We ended up walking past a second Senor Frog’s in Cabo San Lucas. The girls had been begging us for years to go to Senor Frog’s, mainly in Cozumel. We would never go, mainly because it isn’t our scene (we aren’t big drinkers). We finally decided to head inside to get one drink so the girls could experience it.
The place was empty (I think because it was early and it was on the far end of the harbor). Nancy and I ordered margaritas and the girls got virgin Pina Coladas. The drinks were relatively good and weren’t too expensive. We mainly rested there for a while and enjoyed the view from the second story. I never did ask the girls if the reality lived up to the hype. I think they thought they would get served alcohol (not that we would have let them drink).
After we finished our drinks, we decided to go get some lunch. Nancy had picked out a great restaurant, Mi Casa. It was located a few blocks away from the harbor. It was nice to get a bit outside of the tourist bubble and see some of the rest of the town. We got to the restaurant after a few minutes of walking. The outside of the building really didn’t prepare us for what was inside though.
Just inside the entryway were two awesome rooms. The one to the left was filled with crosses.
The other area was the bar. I loved all the old wood that was in the bar.
After checking out the two rooms, we were greeted by the hostess. She let us into the courtyard, which was fabulous. The tables and chairs were all very colorful and there were great murals painted on the walls.
We took a seat on the far end of the courtyard and ordered some lunch. As we waited for lunch, more patrons started to come in.
Our food arrived relatively quickly. It was really delicious, although I don’t really remember exactly what it was.
I have no idea what this dish was.
After lunch, we decided to head back to the ship. We headed off back towards the tender dock. It took about 15 minutes to get back to the dock. There wasn’t a line, so we jumped onto the next boat that showed up.
After a few minutes, we left Cabo San Lucas and were headed back to the Wonder.
As soon as we got back on the ship, the girls headed off to enjoy the ship. Nancy and I got changed and went up to the adult area. The ship was still relatively quiet at this point, so we were able to read and relax some. After being at the pool area for a few hours, we went into Cove Cafe and grabbed some coffee.
We took our drinks down to the Promenade Lounge. There was a round of Spin the Wheel going on that we wanted to watch. It is Disney Cruise’s version of Wheel of Fortune. They divide the room into two halves and let them fight it out. There is a lot of good-natured cheering and booing going on, but it was all in fun. After the game was over, we headed back into the room to change for dinner. We managed to get a nice shot of the Arch as well as a beautiful sunset.
Nancy and I had scheduled Palo dinner for tonight. We knew that it was Pirate night based on the schedule from the Disney Cruise Line website. Since we had already enjoyed that menu several times, we decided to head to Palo for an early dinner. We could then join the girls for their dinner in the main dining room. The dinner was really good, but not as good as brunch in our opinion. It was definitely nice to experience something new on a Disney Cruise though.
We headed to the dining room to meet up with the girls. They were already into their dinner in Triton’s. It was not long before the pirates were getting out of hand. Our waiter Shane was getting into the act as well!
After dinner, we headed back to the room to change. While we were changing, we caught some of the Pirate fireworks from our balcony!
As the fireworks were ending, we remembered that they were having the Pirate Buffet tonight. We had never managed to get up to the Pirate Buffet. We certainly weren’t hungry, but we did go up to get some pictures. We went back to the room after getting our pictures. We had to clear this guy off the bed before we could go to sleep though.
Next up, we get to enjoy another great sea day, hopefully with less sunburn!

The Disney Cruise Line Spring 2019 Itineraries were released at the end of October 2017. While scanning through the list, we decided either the Magic or Wonder 5 night cruises would fit within our budget. The Magic would be on a 5 night Western Caribbean leaving Miami on April 14th, 2019 with stops at Cozumel and Castaway Cay. The Wonder would be on a 5 Night Baja cruise leaving San Diego on April 14, 2019 with stops at Cabo San Lucas and Ensenada.
I asked the family which cruise they would prefer, thinking they would want to go on the Magic again to visit Castaway Cay (we’ve done this cruise four times before). Select here or here to read about it. Much to my surprise, everyone wanted to go back on board the Wonder! We hadn’t been back on the Wonder since our 5-night Western Caribbean on March 20, 2016. The itinerary was a new one to us, sailing out of San Diego. We’ve been to San Diego before and really enjoyed it. We called up our travel agent, Michelle McKnight to get the cruise booked! We requested an Ocean View Cabin on Deck 2 forward.
Flights
Once we had the cruise booked, we had to wait to book our flights. Once the booking window opened, I checked through the various airline programs that we had points in to see what was available. We couldn’t have the girls miss too much school, so we had a narrow window to get our flights. The girls would get out of school on a Friday and the cruise left on Sunday.
We eventually decided to book our flights on United using the Mileage Plus miles we have accumulated through work travel and sign up bonuses from the Chase United MileagePlus Explorer card. We love holding this card because of the priority boarding we receive as well as the extra Saver Level (the lowest level costing award) availability. We also receive free bags for up to two people on each reservation, which saves us the cost of the annual fee of the credit card.
United had flights at the Saver level (round trip flights for 25,000 miles per person) available for Saturday, so we booked those. Initially, the flight would leave early early from Dulles at 8:15 am have a long six hour layover at Newark before heading on to San Diego.
In November, our flights got changed to leave Dulles at 8:20 am and fly to San Francisco. We would then stay there for two hours before heading to San Diego, arriving at 2:45 pm. We thought this change was a much better flight for us, because we would arrive in San Diego with a lots time to get some dinner and relax before getting on the ship the next day.
Our return flight wasn’t going to be fun. We would leave San Diego at 7:50 am and land in Houston at 1 pm. We would layover there for seven hours, taking off for Dulles at at 8 pm and landing at 12:07 am. We had to go to work and school the next morning as well, so it would be rough. Luckily, we got an update from United in November that would have us leaving Houston at 4:30 pm and landing at Dulles at a reasonable 8:30 pm.
Lodging
We knew we would need one night of lodging before the cruise and two nights after the cruise. Since we aren’t going to have a lot of time at the hotel before the cruise, we decided to use one of the free nights that come with our Chase Hyatt credit card to just get a room for the night. We selected the Hyatt Regency Mission Bay Spa and Marina. It is close to Mission Beach, where we planned to grab something to eat and watch the sunset before getting on our cruise the next day.
For our post cruise stay, we decided to use our free Hilton Weekend certificates from our Hilton Aspire American Express Card to book the Hotel Del Corando, which is one of the inspirations that Walt Disney used for the Grand Floridian Resort at Walt Disney World. The card also comes with a $250 resort credit that we planned to use for dinner and/or breakfast. We wanted to spend the weekend enjoying the resort and maybe taking some short trips around San Diego via Uber.
Excursions/Activities
As Platinum Castaway Club cruisers, we were able to book our excursions and activities 120 days before the cruise (because we were paid in full). Since we weren’t stopping at Castaway Cay, we didn’t really have to rush in at midnight to try to get a Cabana. Instead, we logged in the next day and looked to see what was available. We decided to try some more of the alcohol tastings. We have previously done Mixology and the Chocolate and Liquor tasting. This time, we added Whiskey Tasting and Rum Tasting.
After we added the alcohol tastings, we moved on to food. We added Palo Brunch on one of the sea days. One of the additional perks as a Platinum Castaway Club cruisers is a free Palo Dinner (which we have used for Brunch before without issue). We later went back and added a Palo Dinner on Pirate night. We thought the Pirate night menu would be ok to miss since we’ve enjoyed it multiple times before.
After booking our food, we moved on to excursions. This cruise stopped at the ports of Cabo San Lucas and Ensenada. We initially decided on a beach excursion at Cabo San Lucas, the Land’s End Coastal Cruise and Beach Break. We eventually canceled it though as the reviews we found weren’t that great. We decided to just walk around Cabo San Lucas and Ensenada and see what interested us.
Our cruise documentation arrived about 45 days before the cruise! It really got us thinking about our vacation, now we just had to wait for the day to arrive!

You’ve heard of the wonderful food available at Palo on board all of the ships of Disney Cruise Line. You may have even seen some of our photos as well. How can you book this on your next Disney Cruise? Follow along as I add a Palo Brunch reservation to an upcoming cruise!
Head over to the Disney Cruise Line web site.
Select “My Cruise Activities” from the My Disney Cruise Menu Option.
You should see something similar to your reservation below. Note: your cruise must be paid in full before this screen will be filled out.
You can then select the “My Plans” tab next to Cruise Details. On the day you would like to book Palo Brunch (or dinner), select “Add Activities”. One of the options that will appear is “Dining”.
Once you have selected “Dining”, you will be given the option of Palo Brunch or Dinner. If you are sailing on the Dream or the Fantasy, you might see offers for Remy as well.
Selecting “Palo Brunch” will bring up a listing of everyone in your sailing party. Palo is only available for cruisers who will be 18 years of age or older. My understanding is that there are no exceptions to this. Select the diners that wish to go to Palo, then choose a dining time. In our case, we selected an 11:00 am brunch time.
One you select “Save”, the saved reservation should be available in your “My Plans” tab on the cruise activities page.
Hopefully, you now see how easy it is to add one of the best dining experiences on the ship. You can also see our Palo Brunch pictures if you are still on the fence.
